Volunteers Crowdsource Radiation Monitoring to Map Potential Risk on Every Street in Japan
Volunteers Crowdsource Radiation Monitoring to Map Potential Risk on Every Street in Japan
"Safecast is a network of volunteers who came together to map radiation levels throughout Japan after the Fukushima Diiachi nuclear power plant disaster in 2011. They soon realized radiation readings varied widely, with some areas close to the disaster facing light contamination, depending on wind and geography, while others much further away showed higher readings. Safecast volunteers use Geiger counters and open-source software to measure the radiation, and then post the data online for anyone to access."

"So while the report was a positive step in disseminating information through a widely respected source, it wasn’t all inclusive and, as such, did little to allay my concerns over radiation affecting those of us who live on the West Coast and our far neighbors in Hawaii, who reside in the middle of an ocean that is continuing to be polluted with Fukushima radiation every day."

“Return To Fukushima” Airs This Week
"The transfer of nuclear fuel from the storage pool atop the crippled Reactor Unit 4 continues. TEPCO’s website reveals no new details, except for a note stating that the leakages at Unit 3 continue. In other most recent news reports concerning Fukushima, even Japan’s constitution seems to be at stake. The government has reportedly promoted a bill that would veil news transparency and keep further events at the TEPCO plant hidden from world scrutiny. CBS discusses an investigation into an online video of Geiger counter readings five times higher than normal at a beach in San Mateo County, California. Other media outlets vacillate between reassurance and fear."

"A new study of the effects of tiny quantities of radioactive fallout from Fukushima on the health of babies born in California shows a significant excess of hypothyroidism caused by the radioactive contamination travelling 5,000 miles across the Pacific. The article will be published next week in the peer-reviewed journal Open Journal of Pediatrics."

Fukushima Meltdowns: Global Denial At Work
www.opednews.com/articles/1/Fukushima-Meltdowns-Globa-by-William-Boardman-Accident_Chernobyl_Chernobyl_Denial-140104-187.html
"For the near future, what all that means, in effect, is that the world has to accept chronic radiation releases from Fukushima as the price for avoiding another catastrophic release. And even then, it's not a sure thing.
But there's another aspect of Fukushima Unit #3 that's even less reassuring. Unit #3 is the one Fukushima reactor that was running on Mixed oxide fuel, or MOX fuel , in its fuel rods. MOX fuel typically uses Plutonium mixed with one or more forms of Uranium. Using Plutonium in fuel rods adds to their toxicity in the event of a meltdown. In part because Plutonium-239 has a half-life of 240,000 years and can be used to make nuclear weapons of "dirty bombs," its use in commercial reactors remains both limited and controversial . Because it contains Plutonium, MOX fuel is more toxic than other nuclear fuel and will burn at lower temperatures."

Did Underground Explosions Rock Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant?
www.samuel-warde.com/2014/01/underground-explosions-rock-fukushima-power-plant/
"A Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution study conducted in October 2011 concluded that the Fukushima disaster had already released 100 times more radiation into the environment than Chernobyl. It is not far-fetched to say that the damage has increased by astronomical proportions when one considers that 300 tons of radioactive waste has been released into the Pacific Ocean on a daily basis since the disaster occurred on March 11, 2011.
The ramifications of this latest report of explosions have yet to be revealed, but it is safe to say that whatever the news, it won’t be good."
